WHY the new masjid and seminary are needed

  • A masjid and seminary serve as a spiritual home for our community’s religious and intellectual life.
  • Our community in the Washington DC Metro area is growing every day.
  • We need a centralized location with convenient access from nearby areas.
  • We have a duty to needs to effectively spread the message of Ahl al-Bayt (as).
  • Aesthetic and inviting place for people of other faiths to learn about the true teachings of Islam.

WHEN will the project be completed

  • Land purchase completed in September, 2018, with a 7 year loan commitment.
  • Architectural renderings and site study have been completed.
  • Currently working with Fairfax County to obtain Special Use Permit for the property.
  • We hope to complete the county hearing and begin site planning in 2022, and to complete construction in 2023, God willing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

  • Who owns the current whole building where Shahe Najaf is located and what will happen to the ownership of the building (all floors) after the new center is built?
    The existing center facility (5501 Cherokee Ave, Alexandria, VA) is currently privately-owned and is provided rent-free to the community for religious use. While the new masjid project is on-going, the Trustees have decided to keep the property in private ownership to facilitate access to equity if and when needed. Once construction is completed, or there is no longer a need for equity from the property, the Trustees will arrange for the property to be converted to a religious endowment for the community.

  • What is the vision and mission for the new center?
    As Muslims, we believe in the primacy of the spirit over the body. As such, a spiritual home is even more important than a physical home. The new masjid is envisioned to provide just such a spiritual home for the community. A place for religious guidance, education, and community building. A place to find peace and tranquility in worship. A place to build community and serve humanity in service of God’s command.

  • Why do we need to acquire the house next to the property to build the new center?
    Together the two parcels of land give us a total of almost six acres with sufficient frontage on Braddock Road to get approval from Fairfax County for the masjid plan. This will give us the space and flexibility to build a center that can meet both our current and our future needs. Although currently separate parcels, the two lots should be seen as a single unit in terms of meeting County and VDOT requirements and in terms of our current and future needs.

  • What if we do not get the permission to build the center there? Is there a Plan B?
    We have already had multiple meetings with the county, department of transportation, and engineers, and have received feedback from the relevant departments. We are currently finalizing our application to Fairfax County. Although no major hurdles are expected, if any issues arise we will work with the county and our builder to ensure they are addressed in an efficient manner.

  • What will be the name of the new center, if not Shahe Najaf?
    Our official name is Imam-e Asr Islamic Seminary. Since the new facility will be a purpose-built masjid and seminary, it will be known as the Imam al-Asr Masjid.

  • Will there be a Masjid at the new center?
    The new center will insha Allah have a formal masjid as well as a fully-functional community center to meet the religious, educational, and social needs of our community.

  • Will there be a Hawza, Sunday School and/or other programs for the community to advance their Islamic knowledge?
    With God’s grace and community support, the new masjid will give special attention to religious education at all levels and for all ages, including specialized classes for those interested in higher Islamic learning.

  • How will the community be involved and engaged in the construction and operation of the new center besides providing funds for it?
    The masjid is being built to serve the community, and therefore the community’s involvement is important at all levels: prayer, material support, participation, operation, and management. Any practicing Shia Muslim can become a member of the Center. The officers and committees of the center are drawn from the active members and volunteers of the Center. Trustees are elected by the general membership for a two-year term and serve on a voluntary basis with the guidance of the Islamic scholar.

  • Are there separate funds for different initiatives and activities of the Imam-e Asr Islamic Seminary, besides the construction fund?
    Currently, the main fundraising need is for the new masjid project. Of course, funds are also needed for regular operations and religious programming, and donations can be earmarked for either purpose. In addition, contributions can be made for a specific purpose, such as burial or educational services, and each of these categories is accounted for separately.

  • What is the composition and terms of the board of trustees and how is it elected?
    The Trustees are elected by the general membership for a two-year term and serve on a voluntary basis in accordance with Islamic teachings and with the guidance of a qualified Islamic scholar. Eligibility to serve as a Trustee is determined by the current Board of Trustees according to the following principles:
    • Candidates should be practicing Shia Muslims and should be active members of the Center in terms of participation and volunteering.
    • Candidates should be familiar and in harmony with the Center’s aims.
    • When there are multiple volunteers, the Trustees should ensure that eligible candidates represent, as best as possible, the diversity of the community in terms of gender and background.

  • What are the roles for the officers of the organization and what are the current committees?
    Committees are appointed by the Trustees from among the general membership. Currently the active committees of the Center are the following:
    • Sunday School
    • Programming Committee
    • Finance Committee
    • Community Affairs Committee

  • How do you ensure transparency and best utilization of funds and donations?
    We have multiple tiers of review for donations and how they are spent. Major expenditures are approved collectively by the board of trustees. Monthly financial reports are shared with the trustees for their review and information. Updates are shared and input is sought from the community in town hall meetings which are conducted periodically and before major decisions are made. Each donor receives a receipt immediately upon donation and an annual donation summary for their tax purposes. An annual donation and expense report is published in a public areas of the building.

  • Do you take Khums, Zakat and any other form of donations for the center?
    Religious funds, including Khums and Zakat can be given to the Center. The donor should note the relevant category of donation so the funds can be disbursed accordingly.
